A woman gave back to a stranger who helped her when she got stranded in Philadelphia.
Kate McClure / məˈklʊər / noticed that her gas was running low so she pulled over. She called her boyfriend for help because she was also out of cash. While waiting for rescue, a homeless man approached Kate to ask her if something was wrong. When he found out about Kate’s misfortune, he told her to wait in her car. Soon, he returned with a can of gas, which he bought using his last money.
The homeless man, whose name was Johnny Bobbit, Jr., did not ask for anything in return, but Kate and her boyfriend visited him several times to give him clothes, food, and money. The kind stranger was always thankful and would share the things he received with his homeless friends.
Inspired by Johnny’s generosity, the couple decided to raise funds through the crowdfunding site GoFundMe to help him start a new life. They were able to raise more than $400,000 in a month through the campaign. The money will be used to buy Johnny a new home and provide him allowance for his other necessities.
This is not the first time that someone used GoFundMe to help a stranger. In another instance, a man started crowdfunding for an old ice cream vendor. He learned that the 89-year-old was only forced to work his fingers to the bone because his grandsons were left in his care when his daughter died. The campaign raised roughly $384,000, which was put into a trust for better management.
