Amazon has a new patent for a wristband that can track employees’ hand movements.
The wristband, which looks like a smartwatch, was created to streamline the processes in Amazon’s warehouses. Through this wristband, tedious tasks like pressing the buttons of inventory bins and scanning barcodes will be eliminated. With more time in their hands, workers will be able to fill more orders.
Amazon’s newly patented wristband uses ultrasonic tracking technology instead of GPS technology. It also uses radio frequency technology, which allows better tracking with the use of signals received from antennas throughout Amazon’s warehouse.
With these technologies, the wristband can guide workers to the exact location of a product, which significantly reduces the time spent in fulfilling orders. Using haptic feedback system technology, the wristband can also tell the workers if they are placing the items in the correct bin through vibrations.
Shipping 26 million items daily, Amazon has always been keen on improving work efficiency. In order to do so, the company continues to create devices and robots that can help processes become more efficient.
Aside from the wristband, Amazon has also recently patented robot “postmen” or autonomous ground vehicles (AGV). The AGV is a small box-shaped droid that can retrieve parcels from trucks and deliver items to a customer’s front door. This droid can also deliver packages inside a customer’s home through the use of Amazon Key, which uses smartlock technology. Smartlock technology allows homeowners to lock and unlock their doors remotely with the use of an app.
