UNDERSTAND

SPEAKING

Kelsie is helping Gracie with the final preparations for her wedding.

Gracie:

Thank you for helping me with all these wedding preparations.

Kelsie:

No problem. That’s what a maid of honor is for, right? (laughs) If you need anything else, you know I’m more than willing to help.

Gracie:

Thanks, Kelsie. This is exactly why I chose you as my maid of honor. It’s not just because we’re like two peas in a pod– you’ve always been there for me through the good and the bad. Remember when that jerk dumped me during the big blizzard?

Kelsie:

You mean Drake?

Gracie:

Yeah, him! I needed a shoulder to cry on so badly, and you didn’t hesitate to drive to my place in the blinding snow to comfort me. Man, we were inseparable at that time.

Kelsie:

Oh, I remember that! You were so crushed. I remember you said you were giving up on love entirely! (laughs) But now you’re about to get married to the love of your life. I couldn’t be happier for you.

Gracie:

Aww, thank you, Kelsie! (sniffles) I think I might cry.

Kelsie:

No time for tears! We have to start on these gift bags!

TRIVIA

In North American weddings, the bride and groom have an entourage of their closest friends. The members of the bride’s entourage are called bridesmaids, while the members of the groom’s entourage are called groomsmen. The brides will also choose one bridesmaid to be her maid/matron of honor, while the groom chooses one groomsman to be his best man. These positions are both an honor and a pain because they are expected to help the bride and groom on their special day!
