Dale and Jennifer Harris, parents of a senior high school student from Massachusetts, went to court to complain. They said their son was unfairly punished for using AI in his history project. They are worried this punishment might affect his future.

The complaint said Teacher Susan Petrie didn’t prohibit using AI for research when she gave the task. But when she found out the student used AI, he got a zero and had to receive a punishment. Because of this, the student won’t be able to join the National Honor Society, a group that awards students for good grades and positive behavior. This could hurt his college prospects.

According to the school, the student received a lenient punishment for using AI, which is a form of plagiarism. The student was allowed to try again and got a lower grade. The complaint says AI work is not plagiarism because it is not made by a person. So, his parents ask the school to give the student a higher grade and remove any record of punishment. Their lawyers say this case raises big questions about the role of AI in schools.
